B Visas for Visitors

The B1/B2 Visa is a temporary visa issued at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy to individuals who want to visit for a limited time in the U.S., either for business or enjoyment. This visa is useful for a variety of purposes, but allows only limited activities in the U.S. Our business immigration attorneys in Atlanta can help evaluate your case to see if a B1/B2 Visa is your best option.

What can a person do while in the U.S. on a B1/B2 Visa?

The B1 category is meant for visitors to conduct business-related activity for which the individual will not be compensated. For example, it can be used to:

  • Conduct meetings with business associates;
  • Attend a conference (whether professional or educational in nature); or
  • Establish a residence prior to being issued an employment or educational based visa.

The B2 category is meant for individuals who wish to conduct any leisure activity. For example:

  • Visiting family and friends;
  • Vacation (holiday);
  • Receiving medical treatment; or
  • Attend a social or entertainment event (such a musical or sporting event).

How long is a B1/B2 visa valid?

The visa will usually be issued for a period of 10 years. However, each time an individual enters the United States, the Immigration officer will usually only allow for a stay no longer than 6 months per visit.

Are the B1/B2 categories the same?

No. The categories are designated for different activities. However, both categories are usually issued together.

Can someone work with a B1/B2 visa?

No. A B1/B2 visa must first be converted into an employment visa in order to obtain employment.
