M-1 Student Visa

The “M” visa is for nonacademic or vocational studies such as mechanical or technical training, cooking classes, flight schools, or cosmetology programs. Because M-1 student visa holders are not allowed to work while in M-1 status, they must prove sufficient funds are immediately available to pay their tuition and living costs for their entire periods of intended stay.

How do I apply for an M-1 Student visa?

To apply for an M-1 Student visa, first, you must apply and be accepted by a vocational or nonacademic program accredited by SEVP. You will need to show the school that you have enough money to support yourself whilst studying without having to work, and you may have to show health insurance in order to cover any medical expenses while enrolled.

Once the program of study has accepted you, it will issue Form I-20 to enable you to apply for your student visa. Finally, you will apply at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over your country of residence. You will attend an interview at that consulate.
