Immigration enforcement program from ICE expanding in Georgia

The Trump administration has quietly expanded an immigration enforcement program in Georgia, signing new agreements to team up with the sheriff’s offices in Bartow and Floyd counties as well as the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Last month, those entities signed paperwork with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to join the 287(g) program. Named after the 1996 federal law that authorizes it, the program deputizes state and local officials to help ICE investigate, apprehend, detain and transport people facing deportation.
President Donald Trump called for an expansion of the program in January of last year. Since then, it has grown rapidly. Before July of last year, there were 42 287(g) agreements nationwide. Now there are 75. Four other counties in Georgia — Cobb, Gwinnett, Hall and Whitfield — already participate.

Alpharetta police fired an officer for not writing a ticket.

ALPHARETTA, GA April 12, 2018 -According to a memo written within the Alpharetta Police Department, officers are supposed to charge drivers with a criminal misdemeanor anytime two cars bump into each other within city limits. This applies to car accidents where the damage is minor and there are no injuries.

Officers do not have the discretion to give warnings.

Drivers who exchange information at accident scenes without calling 911 don't have to worry, but if an officer is requested to write an accident report, he or she is not allowed to leave without giving at least one of the drivers a ticket.

A key area of Immigration Law which is not often discussed is what happens after an order of removal becomes final. When an individual receives an order of removal, they are not immediately put on a plane back to their home country. Some induvial remain in custody while preparations for their departure are made. However, most individuals work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) to make preparations to depart. Many immigrants own significant property or businesses in the United States or they may have sick family members for whom they need to find other care. The United States government is aware of this and will generally give people time to put their affairs in order. However, at this point in an immigration case, the question is not if an alien will be required to depart but when.

Trump heats up rhetoric on border, immigration as some supporters grow impatient

4/3/2018

President Trump’s sharp shift in tone on immigration this week from would-be dealmaker back to the hard-line stance he campaigned on comes amid signs that some of his conservative base is growing impatient for him to fulfill promises on the border wall and other measures to crack down on illegal immigration.
