Yesterday, I tried to install a lock on a closet door. Half-way through the process, I had to abandon the project because I lacked the proper tools. Every professional uses some sort of tools to produce or manufacture certain products. The carpenter uses the hammer and nails, the stone mason uses the plumbing line and the trowel, the architect uses pencil and paper.
How about a lawyer? What kind of tools does he use in his line of business? Some say a briefcase, a pen to take notes and a paper to write on. The truth is that a lawyer’s tool is his word; the spoken or written. There is power in the spoken word. When you hire a lawyer to represent you before the court or before a government official, you want your lawyer to speak with weight, persuasion and force. The truth is that a lawyer’s word is as heavy as his reputation. That is why the selection of a lawyer is such an important aspect of someone’s case. A bad lawyer is the peril of the client, and the client can choose a bad lawyer to his detriment. A good lawyer, on the other hand, speaks confidently and his reputation gives weight to his word. His word has weight and when he delivers arguments, good results come about. He adds value to his client’s life.
How can one know how to choose a lawyer whose reputation is beyond reproach? This is not an easy task, however, here are a few indicators of a good lawyer: He tells the truth at all times, even when it hurts. He respects his clients for who they are, not for how they can benefit him. He treats them with honor and dignity. He goes the extra mile to ensure that his clients’ interests are at the core of his business. He is not burdened, but passionate about the opportunity given him by his clients to assist them with his legal abilities and skills. He is well spoken of in the community. The reviews of other clients speak volumes of the character of a lawyer. He keeps his clients informed and communicates well with them throughout the entire process of the case. He is humble to admit when he makes an error. He apologizes and corrects his ways.
I know of a good lawyer. He is the best and He never lets his people down. He is my lawyer, as well. I can count on his word and promises. He never takes his promises back, even if I breach my word. I go to him to receive wisdom and council. He communicates well and has a good reputation. His reviews are impeccable. He’s never done wrong to anyone. He keeps giving, blessing and forgiving. He loves justice and truth and I am humbly thankful that he hired me to work for HIM and His sons and daughters.
